I will never forget the first time I heard “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” by the Geto Boys. It was 1995 and I was in a hellish middle school run by a witch of an old woman, and I was mad at the world. So when I got my hands on someone’s mixtape–I don’t remember who or the circumstances of how I was able to–and I heard Scarface say, “I sit alone in my four-cornered room staring at candles,” man, listen… I knew I had found one of the staple songs to the soundtrack of my life–the dark parts anyway–because nothing else aside from Tupac would be able to summarize what I was feeling. Whether I was jealous or insecure about a relationship, or I was having a hard time in general, “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” was always in heavy rotation on whatever CD or playlist I had at the ready. It’s on my playlist still.
Aside from that, the track is just creepy in and of itself, and the video does an amazing job of conveying the paranoia, terror, depression, and anxiety felt or at least rapped about by Geto Boys Bushwick Bill, Scarface and Willie D. From having fatal “thoughts of suicide” to the psychotic break that lead Bushwick to beat his hands against the pavement when he thought he was beating up a shadowy character that was stalking him on Halloween, there is no end to the personal hell they rap about in this Southern rap classic. And if you can’t get with that, on a very superficial level the song is perfect for Halloween… Check it out:
